GRADUATION SUCCESS STORY: Egg Harbor Township Graduate to Study Communication at Temple University
May 16, 2013
One would never know that Marie Lizette Salomon suffered from low self-esteem at the beginning of her college career.
“I wanted to go away for school like my high school friends, but due to financial issues, I stayed home and began my career at Atlantic Cape,” the Egg Harbor Township resident said.
With the support of Atlantic Cape faculty, her commitment to optimism and her involvement in extracurricular activities at the college, Salomon found purpose.
“What my professors have taught me throughout my three years at Atlantic Cape can’t be found in any textbook or PowerPoint presentation,” Salomon said. “They have taught me life lessons that have truly helped in my personal and academic life and I will take them with me wherever my career takes me.”
The 21-year-old commends communication professors Keith Forrest and Dr. Joy Jones for encouraging her to get involved in the Atlantic Cape Review, Communication and Art Awards Show committee, and to pursue internships at NBC-40 and Longport Media.
Her experience at Atlantic Cape, paired with the practice of writing herself encouraging daily messages, has helped Salomon develop the confidence to pursue her dreams, which include sports reporting and becoming a movie director.
“There are little Post-It notes all over my room with sayings like ‘you’re a rock star’ and ‘stay focused’—they remind me to take a breather and enjoy the life I’ve been blessed with,” she said.
After graduating from Atlantic Cape on May 23 with an associate degree in communication, Salomon will attend Temple University’s School of Media and Communication in Philadelphia.
“I will take my Atlantic Cape education with me to my classes at Temple University, MetLife Stadium reporting on the New York Giants, or on my movie set in L.A.”
