Atlantic Cape Trustees Meet and Approve Personnel Matters, Honor Retirees

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Board of Trustees met June 24 and approved personnel matters, contracts and purchases, and honored retirees.

In Personnel Action:

The board approved these appointments:

-- Sylvester Carrington of Galloway, security officer I, effective July 1.

--James Smith of Atlantic City, security officer I, effective June 25.

--Janet Brown Marler of Northfield, associate dean, academic support services, effective July 14.

--Jennifer Rowand of Egg Harbor Township, controller, finance, effective August 4.

--Joyce Thurlow, senior clerk, bursar’s office, effective June 25.

--Deborah Seaman, senior nursing lab manager, nursing and allied health, effective June 30.

In other action:

-- The board accepted the resignation of Lauren Laughlin, specialist, financial aid, effective July 15.

--James Homan, maintenance mechanic II, facilities, announced his retirement, effective June 30.

The board granted long-time college attorney, Louis J. Greco, a new one-year contract, effective July 1, 2014. He’ll receive a retainer of $44,210 a year and an hourly rate of $129.22 for litigation and off-campus hearings.

FY15 Tuition and Fee Scheduled Revised

The board approved per student per course fees for flight training services, adding program fees for experiential flight, $2,162, aeronautical skills, $2,862, private pilot, $13,354, instrument pilot, $14,828, airplane flight instructor, $7,905, and commercial pilot, $21,274. The board approved per student per course fees for helicopter training, adding program fees for private pilot helicopter, $27,672.49, instrument pilot helicopter, $25,749.99, and commercial pilot helicopter, $23,072.49. The allied health and nursing programs entrance exam fee was raised from $60 to $80.

--Roof Replacement, Noble Roofing & Sheet Metal, Richboro, PA, $339,745.

--Renovations for Mays Landing and Worthington Atlantic City campuses, MJJ Construction, Atco, $583,000.

--Five-year contract for elevator maintenance, East Coast Elevator, Turnersville, $31,490.

--Central storeroom supplies, Office Basics, Boothwyn, PA, $36,001.50.

--Paper and envelopes, Paper Mart, East Hanover, $5,802.88; Office Basics, Boothwyn, PA, $37,430.

--Propagation (Hydroponics) System for Worthington Atlantic City Hospitality Wing Greenhouse, American Hydroponics, Arcata, CA, $21,585.20.

--Professional Architectural Services, Spiezle Architectural Group, Trenton, $854,626.

--Computer memory, Global Computer Supplies, Port Washington, NY, $22,818.37.

--Three-year contract for Blackboard license and services, New Jersey Virtual Community College Consortium, Trenton, $113,887.88.

--Networking switching and routing equipment, Ocean Computer Group, Matawan, $470,718.98.

Trustees approved the contract renewal for a six month term July 1, 2014-December 31, 2014, for Follett Higher Education Group with the current commission rate of 11.6% of sales up to $2.5M, 12.6% of sales between $2.5M and $5M and 13.6% of sales over $5M.

Trustees approved the college’s continued participation in the N.J. Community College Insurance Pool and agreed to pay $304,777 for the pool’s 2014-2015 Worker’s Compensation

Fund. They voted to award a contract with Borden Perlman for insurance with a premium of $389,915 during FY’15 including multi-peril/commercial, data security liability, umbrella, errors and omissions, environmental, excess, flood, and builder’s risk WACC and STEM, plus non-owned aircraft insurance to be determined. They authorized the award of contract to T.L. Groseclose Associates for student insurance, accident and catastrophic for sports. They approved the purchase of a student planning license from Ellucian for $24,295.

In the President’s Report:

Board Chairperson David Evans led a program on behalf of the board to honor the college’s 6 retirees in attendance. Evans thanked the retirees for their years of service to the college, stating “for each of these retirees, it’s not a matter of the time they’ve spent at the college but what they accomplished during that time. They will leave a legacy at the college that will not be forgotten.”

In Other Business:

--Trustees approved the May 31, 2014, financial statement.

--The college will apply for a U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant for $2,500,000 over the anticipated term of October 2014 to September 2018. The application calls for the college to prepare participants for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations by using innovative and sophisticated teaching and learning strategies that reach a large number of unemployed or underemployed adults.

Board Chairperson Evans thanked Board of Trustees Alumni Representative Harrison Furman for his dedication over the past year, stating that Furman “has truly been an asset to the board and he will certainly be missed.” He also read a proclamation from the board outlining Furman’s “outstanding contributions” during his service. Evans stated that based on Furman’s service the board would now allow alumni representatives to vote on the board.    

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 22, at the Mays Landing Campus, Room J-202. All are welcome to attend.
