Archer from Hammonton Wins Target Championship
August 20, 2007Steve Gatto of Hammonton, a member of Atlantic Cape Community College's archery team, was the top competitor at the 2007 National Target Championship, Aug. 6-11, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Gatto was the overall champion in the men's compound division. "I was really excited. It's still sinking in," he said.
Gatto said he had not practiced much with Coach Helen Bolnick of Elmer or at home, where he has a target set up in his back yard, before the tournament. "I didn't go out expecting to do this well," he said.
He returns to classes Sept. 4, and will continue practicing, however, his next major competition is not until March.
Gatto recently competed at the XXV Torneo Batalla de Carabobo in Venezuela in June where he won the Gold Cup for overall performance in the men's compound competition. This archery championship included competitors from around the world.
Gatto, 20, has been shooting for ACCC's archery team since he began attending ACCC in 2005. He fell in love with archery when he went to the Atlantic City Archery Classic as a spectator in high school and saw archers from ACCC compete.
