ACCC Hires Support Staff, Purchases Books For New Cape May County Campus - August 2005

MAYS LANDING-Atlantic Cape Community College continued to staff up and stock up for the start of the fall semester and the opening of its new Cape May County Campus, when the college's board of trustees met Aug. 23.
The board approved the hiring of grounds/maintenance, housekeeping and security staff as well as a courier to serve the new campus in Middle Township. It also endorsed the purchase of $50,000 in books, $25,000 of which will be housed at the new facility's library.
That campus opened to staff and students Aug. 22, and an official grand opening ceremony was held Aug. 24.
Of 13 staff members appointed, eight will work at the new campus. They are:
--William Buoro, Seaville; David Polding, Cape May Court House; Maria Rose, Absecon; and Martin Wheat, Minotola; all named security guard I, effective Aug. 24.
--Maureen McMahon, Egg Harbor Township, and Patricia Wickham, Rio Grande, named housekeeper I, effective Aug. 24.
--Timothy Cliggett, Wildwood, grounds/labor/ maintenance worker, effective Aug. 24.
--Thom Partin Sr., Absecon, courier clerk, effective Aug. 24.
Other appointments approved include:
--Al Jou, Vernon, Conn., assistant professor of mathematics, effective Sept. 6.
--Donna Marie McElroy, Egg Harbor Township, assistant professor of social science, effective Sept. 6.
--Melisa Rousseau, Egg Harbor Township, assistant professor of English, effective Sept. 6.
--Walt Bernacki, Cape May, assistant professor of English, a full-time one-semester appointment for Fall 2005, effective Sept. 6.
--Tak-Shun Chung, Galloway, library specialist, effective Aug. 24.
In other personnel matters, the board:
--Adjusted the title of Carol Drea, Glassboro, to director of corporate training and Casino Career Institute, from director of corporate training, retroactive to July 4.
--Accepted the resignations of Ellen Gregory, administrative assistant to the president, effective Aug. 31; Melinda Hoag, program coordinator, corporate training, retroactive to Aug. 8; and Mark Jones, assistant professor, criminal justice, effective Sept. 1.
Purchases, Contracts Approved:
--Classroom and office furniture for the ACCC-operated Institute for Service Excellence at Hamilton Mall, Allied Office, Cherry Hill, up to $43,000.
--Library books for the Mays Landing and Cape May County campus libraries, Baker & Taylor books, Bridgewater, up to $50,000.
--Language lab system upgrade for English as a Second Language instruction, Educational System/Service, Allentown, Pa., $42,658.
--Reimbursement made as lead agency under the Adult Education Grant, FY'05 expenses, Pleasantville Public Schools, $85,443.
To enable the purchase of furniture for the Institute for Service Excellence, the board approved a separate resolution authorizing the allocation of $95,000 from the college's FY'05 fund balance to the FY'06 institutional operations budget. The funds represent a portion of the surplus realized from the college's recently closed N.J. Dept. of Labor Retail customized training contract.
The board accepted $765,000 from the N.J. Dept. of Labor's Adult Basic Skills and English Literacy and Civics Grant programs. The funds, which will be used in a consortium with other local partners, will assist adult learners to become literate and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self sufficiency. The grant runs July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006.
In Other Action, the Board:
--Accepted the monthly financial report, as presented by Treasurer Nick Talvacchia.
--Accepted the updated attestation report on the college's international program through the end of FY'04.
--Learned that the Leaves for Learning project had raised more than $71,000 and that more than $26,000 has been secured in sponsorships for the Foundation's Cape May County Gala Celebration Sept. 30. Trustee Albert Monillas provided that information in the ACCC Foundation report.
In the President's Report:
Dr. Peter Mora introduced three staff members who provided these updates:
--Carmen Royal, dean of students, gave enrollment, Cape May County student services and New Student Day reports. Although registration is still under way, headcount enrollment is up 3.18 percent over last fall and credits are ahead by 4.38 percent. As of Monday, 837 students had enrolled for classes at the Cape May County Campus. Thanks to support from Information Technology staff, workers were registering students one hour after the doors opened on Monday, she said. More than 400 students and family members attended the recent New Student Day.
--Dr. Arthur Wexler, acting senior dean of academic affairs, said that the college's initial draft report for its Middle States accreditation visit is ready and will be shared with visiting team members Nov. 8. After their input, revisions will be made in preparation for the full site visit in March 2006.
--Dr. Joseph Rossi, acting dean, Cape May County Campus and labor relations, highlighted various aspects of the pending grand opening ceremony and credited staff members for their hard work on the project and the preparation of the new campus.
The next meeting of the board of trustees will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the new Cape May County Campus, Middle Township. All are welcome to attend.
