Jump Start is Atlantic Cape’s premiere high school recruitment/enrollment program graduating seniors. Through Jump Start, Atlantic Cape recruiters visit all high schools throughout Atlantic and Cape May Counties to talk about Atlantic Cape’s admissions procedures, programs offered, student services, financial aid and other education and career opportunities. The Jump Start process occurs in three phases: presentation and application collection; placement exam and course scheduling.
Phase 1: Applying
In order to be considered for admission to Atlantic Cape, a student needs to submit an application, plus a non-refundable $35 application fee.* Once a date has been scheduled, Atlantic Cape recruiters will attend high schools to collect applications and application fees. While there, recruiters will address students in a group regarding Atlantic Cape degree and non-degree programs, how to prepare for our placement exam, tuition, applying for financial aid as well as the transfer process.
Phase 2: Placement Exam
All students who have applied and will be pursuing a degree at Atlantic Cape are required to take our placement exam, the ACCUPLACER. The ACCUPLACER determines how you will be placed into our English and math courses. Atlantic Cape’s testing staff travel to Atlantic and Cape May County high schools to administer the ACCUPLACER. The ACCUPLACER is a computer-based exam and assesses students in the areas of reading comprehension, sentence skills, writing, arithmetic and algebra. It is also an untimed exam. Students are highly encouraged to review for the placement exam beforehand to get a sense of what will be administered. Visit The College Board website to view sample questions. Also, download the ACCUPLACER Study App for your smartphone.
While SAT or ACT scores are not required for admission to Atlantic Cape, if a student has taken either one of these exams and has achieved certain scores, they can be waived from the ACCUPLACER. Students who have scored a 540 or above on the Critical Reading section and a 530 on the Math section can be waived from the placement exam. For students who have taken the ACT, they can be waived from the placement exam with a 22 in Mathematics and a combined 47 in English/Reading. Scores must be presented in order to be waived.
Phase 3: Course Scheduling
Once students have completed an application and have taken the ACCUPLACER, they will then be able to schedule courses for the fall. Students can also schedule courses for the summer in order to get a quicker start to their college career. Atlantic Cape’s advising and counseling staff meet with all high school seniors throughout Atlantic and Cape May Counties to schedule courses based on their program of interest and outcome of their placement exam. Students who enroll through Jump Start are at a great advantage because they are able to schedule classes early on in the process. Therefore, they are able to prepare a schedule based around work, family, etc. while classes are still readily available.
*The application fee can be waived if a student meets certain financial criteria and if the appropriate application fee waiver accompanies the application. Please check with your guidance office for further information.
