Outstanding Student Athletes Recognized for Accomplishments

Brittany Yachere 'Woman of the Year'

Atlantic Cape Community College softball team captain Brittany Yachere, 20, of Mays Landing, was named a “Woman of the Year” for 2011 by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Yachere, who was recognized for her leadership and positive role model qualities, was honored along with other Women of the Year recipients at the 19th annual New Jersey National Girls and Women in Sports Day awards luncheon at Seton Hall University in February 2011.

Meanwhile, John Benigno of North Cape May and Mary Lumor of Galloway, both 20, were named Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their exemplary achievements during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Benigno, a goalkeeper for Atlantic Cape’s soccer team, maintained a 3.71 GPA toward a General Studies Associate in Science degree. Lumor, an all-purpose volleyball player, maintained a 3.72 GPA and is working toward a Nursing Associate in Applied Science degree.

To be eligible for this recognition, student athletes must complete three college semesters, maintain a 3.6-3.79 GPA for 45 semester hours and letter in at least one sport recognized by the NJCAA.
