About the Artist and his Work
Born in 1949, this Newark, New Jersey native shaped his perception of the
art experience through being a keen observer and committed visionary. Although
essentially self-taught, Maddox graduated from Arts High School in Newark.
He attended Newark State (Kean) College and studied briefly at the School
of Visual Arts in New York and at Atlantic Community College in Mays Landing,
New Jersey.
During the 1980's, Maddox embarked on an exhaustive study using watercolor,
pen and ink, and graphite as his mediums. During this period he honed his
understanding of the abstract and his abstractive reasoning. He has this
to say about his large oils:
"The grain of the canvas showing through applied color creates the
cellular structure of my work. The final layer of paint is the epidermis,
and everything in between, on all planes, has common visual genetics."
Maddox's study during the 1980's was a premeditated preparation for his
transition into oils. In 1990, for the first time he began to use oils
as his medium. In 1992 he was featured in a one-person exhibit at Atlantic
Community College. The works included were part of the "Vision Series."
Although his constant painting has kept his exhibiting to a minimum,
on several occasions he has exhibited at the Atlantic City Arts Center
on Garden Pier. In the summer of 1996 he placed second in the oils category
in the Annual Atlantic City Boardwalk Show. In preparation for his February
1997 exhibit at ACC he stated:
"This is only fitting because my life has always been a series of
completing circles."
