Central Service is the hub of all activities involving equipment and supplies
for surgery, obstetrics and the emergency room. This program is designed to prepare
you for a position as a central service technician with exposure to all areas
of central service functioning.
You will learn principles of cleaning and processing equipment, methods of sterilization and disinfection, packaging, storage, maintenance of equipment, inventory control, basic surgical instrument identification, etc. Central service is located in all health care facilities, including hospitals, clinics, surgery centers and doctors’ offices. New Jersey Department of Health standards require certification for everyone working in sterile processing. Students will have the opportunity to visit a central service department at a local medical facility.
Upon successful completion, you will be a Registered Central Service Technician (RCST) with the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). You will be eligible for permanent certification after completing 400 hours of experience and passing the IAHCSMM certification examination.
