Surgical Technician

Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED, physical exam including drug screening, documentation of immunizations, PPD, hepatitis B series and a criminal background check. Proof must be provided on the first day of class. Candidates must successfully complete an academic assessment test.

Surgical technicians work during surgery passing instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and participating in the counts of sponges, needles and instruments. After an operation, surgical technicians help clean and restock the operating room. Hospitals are the primary employers for surgical technicians, but faster employment growth is expected in offices of physicians and outpatient care centers. The curriculum is based on the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) guidelines and includes such classes as Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Microbiology, Surgical Technology, Surgical Procedures, Pharmacology, Medical Terminology and clinical rotation.

This program covers 11 months and prepares the student for the AST certification exam. Twenty-four college credits will be awarded upon successful completion of this course if applied to an ACCC degree program. Financial assistance is available
to qualified candidates.

Credentials

The attainment of a professional credential verifies that the surgical technologist demonstrates a broad general knowledge of the field and is capable of performing the responsibilities demanded by almost any surgical suite across the country. Prospective employers can utilize the credential as a benchmark for screening the most qualified candidates. Only students who have completed training offered by CAAHEP accredited programs are eligible to sit for the national certification exam which is a requirement for credentialing. The Surgical Technology Program at Atlantic Cape Community College is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation by the Accreditation Review Committee of Surgical Technologists.
