GEAR UP Atlantic Cape Provides Local Students with the Resources Needed to Enter and Succeed in Higher Education
Atlantic Cape Community College is one of seven colleges in New Jersey to offer GEAR UP, a grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide academic support, college preparation and activities to middle and high school students. GEAR UP strives to raise academic awareness, increase academic aspirations and strengthen academic achievement among low income students. By coupling student services (like free tutoring, mentoring, academic and career counseling, skills workshops and college visits) with parental involvement initiatives, GEAR UP educates students and families about the value of higher education, the college enrollment process and financial aid possibilities.
Eligible students in six target schools (Pleasantville Middle School, Pleasantville High School, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Complex, Sovereign Avenue School, Uptown Complex and Atlantic City High School) can register with GEAR UP to participate in the Academic Year Program and the Summer Academy. The Academic Year Program consists of Saturday School meetings with project-based instruction in the subjects of math, science and language arts.
Once registered with the program, students are followed throughout their primary and secondary school years and through the first year of college enrollment. This ensures every student is assisted in the planning of their educational and career options during the most integral time of personal development. Seats are available for interested students.
