Home Solar 101
Did you know that New Jersey is the No. 2-installer of solar panels in the United States? This course will provide you with information about why solar is a popular clean, renewable energy source locally and around the world. Instructor Susan D’Agostino, of Elizabeth Homes and Solar America, will discuss how solar systems work and how energy is harnessed from the sun, types of installation methods, and the affordability of solar and solar advantages. While not a technical course, some basics about solar energy will be presented.

Home Wind Energy 101
Windmills as an alternative home energy source have come a long way in the last decade. Spencer Hamilton of Shore Green Energy will lead a discussion on basic windmill technology. General information about the power of smaller windmill technology, maintenance, incentives and environmental factors will be presented.

Understanding the ‘House as a System’ Concept
Break down the concept of “house as a system” in this class by exploring each component of construction and the implications that proper use of materials and techniques will have on improving performance. Using an actual case study, the course will explain the details of design and construction methods and materials. RESNET test at additional cost can be scheduled at the end of the program.
At the end of the program, you will be able to: understand design and construction techniques for an Energy Star home using systems approach; identify planning and design aspects of energy efficient homes; understand the impact of the energy conservation on energy usage and environmental air quality and comfort; and identify materials and finishes that are sustainable.
This course is AIA-registered for 6.5 HSW/SD/LU hours.
