Landscaping Industry Certified Technician-Exterior

Prerequisites: Candidates must obtain a language score of 8 and math score of 8 on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).

Like to work outside? Changing careers or new in the workforce? Employment of grounds maintenance workers is expected to increase by 18 percent from 2008-18, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, grounds maintenance workers will be among the occupations with largest numbers of new jobs, around 269,200. More workers will be needed to keep up with increasing demand for lawn care and landscaping services, both from large institutions and from individual homeowners.

Landscape technicians, also known as greenskeepers, landscape workers, groundskeepers or grounds maintenance workers, are responsible for the care and upkeep of outdoor spaces such as gardens, yards, parks or golf courses. As a landscape technician, you may also tend to indoor facilities with outdoor vegetation, such as gardens or greenhouses. You will learn about different types of plants and flowers, common landscaping tools and machines, and techniques in green irrigation and landscape design. This course will focus on maintenance and installation of landscapes.

Certified landscape technicians earn higher wages than noncertified according to BLS.gov. Earn a national industry credential through PLANET, which is administered through NJ Landscape Contractors Association at an offsite location. Includes choice of one exam, books and supplies.

Instruction will include the following courses: Intro to Windows XP, Internet, MS Word 10 and
MS Excel 10, Professional Development, Basic Math, OSHA, Autocad, Softscape Installation, Hardscape Installation, Turf Maintenance and Ornamental Maintenance. (27.5 CEUs)
