The Director, Security & Public Safety directs all safety and security operations for all campus locations providing protection to person and property through oversight of security staff and contracted armed officers. Coordinate response to all threats and emergencies involving police, fire, emergency medical services, HazMat, office of emergency management, office of homeland security and preparedness. Oversees emergency preparation activities.

  • Reports to the Dean, Human Resources, Public Safety & Compliance
  • Protecting the life, well-being and property of individuals and the college, oversees a variety law enforcement and security functions
  • Oversees the conduct and completion of security investigations of incidents relative to persons and property, making internal and external referrals as necessary
  • Reviews security and public safety programs, systems and procedures, promoting/coordinating professional development of colleagues
  • Advises the Dean of any incident or condition at any campus that might jeopardize the safety and security of individuals or the public image of the college
  • Coordinates security and public safety efforts with local, state and regional law enforcement authorities
  • Oversees the maintenance of the security incident log/incident reporting system, completing monthly and annual reports.
  • Posts appropriate safety bulletins or notices and advises of any serious situations requiring non routine attention
  • Maintains knowledge of Clery, Title IX and other state and federal laws, statutes and regulations, overseeing the development and distribution of the Annual Security Report (ASR/Clery)
  • In collaboration with departmental supervisors, researches, reviews, writes and maintains the Emergency Operation Plan for the college, recording and implementing ongoing updates through post-event debriefs
  • Maintains readiness of the incident command center and the emergency operations center for response to any emergency and/or disaster on any campus, providing periodic incident command systems and higher education multiple hazard emergency planning training to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains liaison role with county emergency management teams and local police departments to enhance capabilities in emergency operations
  • Oversees orientation and on the job training and arranges for professional development and training in law enforcement security procedures for security and contracted officers
  • Conducts periodic in-service Active Shooter training to faculty and staff and campus-wide fire/lockdown drills/training for all each semester
  • Arranges for/conducts safety inspections of fire extinguishers and related devices
  • Oversees enforcement of traffic and parking regulations at college facilities, assigning parking lot attendants and staff to patrol
  • Prepares and disseminates duty schedules for all campuses, maintaining efficient work schedules, verifying time records and approving overtime
  • Conducts evaluations for security guards at all sites and assures that all security personnel maintain certification in CPR and first aid
  • Oversees the monitoring of security equipment and supplies at each campus
  • Oversees key assignment, electric lock codes and culinary locker codes
  • Serves on College and/or community-based committees/organizations related to safety and security such as Safe Campus Cross – Functional Committee, College and University Public Safety Association (CUPSA) and local Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) with county emergency operations centers
  • Assist with grants and research departments in applying for grants for disaster funding
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
  • At least five years of supervisory experience in a security/public safety setting; experience in a diverse academic environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security and law enforcement procedures
  • Knowledge of State and federal regulations, methods and procedures governing emergency and disaster plans including on-going monitoring of threats through state and local resources
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions, remaining calm and making rational decisions in crisis situations
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communications, specifically with customer relations and incident reports
  • Must be available in emergency situations with ability to work shift hours when needed
  • Computer literacy with knowledge of security reporting systems, Competitive Edge preferred
  • Must possess valid NJ Driver’s license
  • Certified in CPR & First Aid with background in Emergency Response and FEMA training preferred
