Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students

On Oct. 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy battered the Atlantic and Cape May County coastline. Historic high tides in the morning and devastating storm surges in the evening as the eye of Sandy moved over our area capped a day of violent wind and destruction.

Although many Atlantic Cape students, faculty, staff, neighbors, friends and family members had evacuated or hunkered down to weather this super storm, no one was really prepared for the after-effects – wrecked houses, contaminated water supplies, flooded streets and hundreds of thousands without power, cable or telephone.

Of course this massive storm impacted millions up and down the Eastern seaboard…but our area took a direct hit.

We know many of our students are suffering. Some have lost their homes and vehicles, many were displaced for days, most lost power and many lost critical hours of work to support themselves and their families.

Our college Foundation is collecting emergency relief funds to help our students in need. Support will be provided to Atlantic Cape students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing, food and to provide financial resources for extra commuting costs or the many things – large and small – essential to a college student and their struggling families.

Atlantic Cape Community College is a fairly small community of close-knit students, faculty and staff.

  • Our students are generally lower income with more than 52% eligible for financial aid and nearly 20% poor enough to qualify for a full Federal Pell Grant (living below poverty).
  • Our students need to work – with more than 80% working at least part time and 58% working more than 21 hours a week while they go to school full time.
  • 30% of our students are raising children.

As you can see, our students have a lot to deal with in usual times….this is not a usual time.
