MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College hosted four local high school girls’ volleyball teams at the inaugural Girls Volleyball Summer Showcase August 13 in the Jonathan Pitney Hall Gymnasium on the Mays Landing campus.

In a tune-up for their upcoming seasons, teams from Cedar Creek, Oakcrest, Pinelands Regional and Pleasantville High Schools competed against each other in six preliminary round matches. In between, the four high schools engaged in mini competitions, such as Basket Setting, Ace the Libero, Bounce and Target Serving with Pleasantville winning all four. For this achievement, Pleasantville was awarded an additional two victories. Pleasantville finished the preliminary round with a 6-2 record while Pinelands went 5-1, Cedar Creek 3-3 and Oakcrest 0-6.

In the first semi-final round, number one seed Pleasantville topped fourth-seeded Oakcrest by scores of 25-13 and 25-10. In the second semi-final round, the second-seeded Pinelands team topped third seed Cedar Creek by scores of 25-9, 21-25 and 15-11. In an exciting final round match, second-seeded Pinelands bested first-seeded Pleasantville by scores of 25-21, 17-25 and 15-9.

Atlantic Cape Women’s Volleyball Head and showcase organizer Karla Maisto was pleased with the event’s initial success.

“The girls received some much-needed preseason touches and got to meet our collegiate student-athletes,” Maisto said. “Getting these high school student-athletes into our gym was an invaluable recruiting tool and we hope to build upon the success of this tournament next year.”
